Well, talk about having quite a week of culinary delight. Had a co-worker in last week ( a real foodie), and the first night we ended up going to Luca Enoteca (at the Fairmont Hotel). I was actually very pleased with this meal. I thought the food was authentic and the atmosphere was elegant but not overdone. Wine list had good values. Server seemed like a rookie, but the overall attention from the floor manager and bartender helped cover up his slips.
Second night we ended up hitting Sandbar. Gotta say it was wonderful! Our server was one of the best I have ever had. It was a slow night (Spurs game) so we got great attention from the chef and server. We had several courses (I actually lost count). I thought the Lobster Bisque was dark and rich, almost like it has some coffee blended in. We had several different oysters from around the country, which is always fun to taste. The cured Salmon was a treat. Only thing I didn't really care for was the Octopus Ceviche, which was just a little chewy for my taste. We had a bottle of Manzanillo Sherry and Sauvignon Blanc to go with the meal.
So after our seminar on Friday, we had some time to kill before his flight. So we made the run out to Luling to hit City Market. This is the BBQ that I grew up on, and it is always a treat to go back. As always, the ribs we perfect. I ordered a little bit of brisket and sausage just to give him the full experience. He thought it was the best he ever had. I know it is the best I ever had. That sauce just does it right!
So for my dads birthday we took him to Austin to hit Fogo de Chao. He never has done any type of fine dining, but I knew this place would be a hit with him. He loved it and will be telling his friends about it for the next year. I would not rate the culinary art of this meal anywhere close to the previous meals, but the spectacle of it all is fun. Anytime you wrap meat with bacon, it sounds good to me! I also thought their garlic tenderloin was pretty tasty. Had a great bottle of Ben Marco Cabernet and then I tried a glass of the Crios Malbec. I was very pleased with both the choices.
So I was quite pleased with the week. Now I am back on trying to watch what I eat a little more closely. My dad has already called to see if a return trip to FOGO is a possibility!
