Santa Barbara: Friday Lunch at Wine Cask -- Free Wine!

On Friday I had lunch at the Wine Cask. It was a nice day so we sat outside in their shaded courtyard. The three of us ordered the smoked trout salad, onion and fig tart, and crab sandwich to share. The crab sandwich was our least favorite. It was covered with a slab of plasticy, flavorless mozzarella that we peeled off and discarded. However, the crab salad beneath had little flavor as well. The tart and salad were much better. The onions in the tart were nicely carmelized and the figs tender and ripe. The salty house-smoked trout was a good match with the peppery watercress and slightly sweet vinaigrette. None of these dishes was absolutely fantastic, and at about $13 each it was a bit too pricey for the quality, we thought. I would generally be hesitant to recommend lunch at Wine Cask unless its an expense account meal or...

..if it's Friday, because on Friday they offer free glasses of wine with lunch. According to the menu, they are doing this in an effort to change people's perception of drinking wine mid-day, mid-week. These aren't top-notch wines, the white retailed for $8 a bottle (Vin de Pays des Cotes de Gascogne Blanc "Colombelle") and the red $12 (I can't remember enough to find it on their website). But they were both very pleasant wines for sipping on a warm Friday afternoon. It definitely boosted the overall value of the meal.
