Last night we tried Sansui on Hillhurst for the first time in a year or so. Someone on the board said they had remodeled and upgraded the menu. On the pro side, they have fixed up the patio and added some more imaginative specials. On the con side, the kind of kitschy old-school Japanese dining room is now generic bland white "tasteful" decor and the prices are a little higher. We ordered very standard stuff --California roll (with real crab), octopus sushi, mixed tempura and chicken udon. The tempura batter was light and greaseless, my boyfriend liked his udon, my son liked his California roll. It was $40 for the three of us including beer, soda and tea. Some people had some interesting looking specials that looked like mixed seafood cocktails over ice in big bowls. I'd always heard negative things about this place but it seemed like a perfectly nice neighborhood place for a Japanese bite, especially if not everyone in the party wants sushi. Service was extemely, possibly overly, attentive but they're obviously trying hard to make the place a more upscale experience. I'd go back again to try some of the more unusual dishes (halibut "calpaccio" anyone?), especially if I didn't feel like driving downtown.
