I had the chance to spend a few days in SS in early April, before travel started shutting down. Had some brilliant meals while there and am already looking to go back for a long weekend so welcome any further recs people want to post below.

Narru- while I didn’t love the service, the food was WOW. I wish there was a tasting menu here because with the size of dishes at present you only get to try 3 for two people, and each dish blew me away. The oxtail ravioli is stunning, with the pasta ranking among the best I have had. The king crab with bread and egg yolk was also stunning, as was the pluma. For dessert we had the cheese cake- second best cheesecake I have ever had.

Galerna Jan Eden Jatetxea- we went for the short tasting and a few glasses of recommended wine. Fantastic bites. First few captured the essence of the sea vividly, and then moved on to dishes captured the best of those rich and warming basque flavors. For its price, and quality, this meal was really outstanding. I am very excited to see how this chef develops in coming years. The one weak point for me were the two desserts. Interesting and creative but not yummy and one was really quite odd.

Zuberoa- everything was well prepared, and the kitchen clearly has great technical skills. Some of the dishes were really delicious, others decent. None were exciting. I personally would not recommend the restaurant to others given the plethora of other places in town that knock it out of the park.

Extebarri- This was my second time here, 9 years after my first visit. The place has become more refined in its dishes, and though I was worried at first this would take away from the stunning simplicity of what Victor is trying to do, I actually think it made the meal that much better. His steak is still the best piece of meat I have ever had, his butter is the best butter, his ice cream is the best ice cream… I really think everyone who can, should try to go here once in their life. However, we were told that there is a good chance he will be closing down the restaurant for good in the not too distant future. Service was not good unfortunately.

Arzak- This was a stellar meal. Excellent wine pairing for my husband, with the tasting menu as written. When I said I was not having the pairing, the waiter then told me that for every single dish on the written tasting menu, there were 1-2 other options that weren’t on the menu, that I could choose from instead. So in the end my husband and I got to have parallel menus, and try double the amount of dishes. All of them were executed fabulously, and many knocked it out of the park. One of the overall best meals I have had in ages. There was a wonderful infusion of Mexican flavor in almost every dish, which made me particularly happy.
