Just wandered into San Miguel, a Guatemalan place on 20th St between Mission and Valencia. Turned out to be a great place with a great kitchen, with colorful decorations and lots of green.
The stuffed chiles were pretty good, but the carne abadobo (spelling?) - marinated pork chops with sides of rice, refried black beans and corn was outstanding. The pork was juicy and tender and the marinate was slightly piquant with sweet and tangy notes. Delicious!
We wandered further into the Mission and ended up on 24th Ave and the displays of baked goods at La Victoria on 24th and Alabama caught my eye. Since I know nothing about Mexican pastries, I just got a whole bunch of things to try. My favorite was a tart like sweet than was filled with a milkly custard (dim sum lovers, think Mexican "dan-ta"). Nice texture, and not too sweet. Also sampled a raisin studded cake with a soft clay-like texture that was also very good. If anyone knows what these baked goods are called, I'd love to know.
