I'm traveling to San Diego starting tomorrow for 10 days, and am excited to explore the city for the first time. We will be staying in Golden Hill for about a week and then Mission Beach/La Jolla for a weekend. During our stay, we plan to bike up/down the coast near La Jolla, take a day trip to Tijuana, and generally just explore San Diego.
We're two graduate students and are interested in finding the following:
-Farmers markets where we can buy fresh produce, baked goods, and cheese to make our own meals.
-Pastry shops - we both love to bake and try new pastries. Donut and ice cream shops are also favorites.
-Casual restaurants with great value for the quality of food you get. We generally have a preference for local foods as well as unique ethnic foods. We also tend to prefer spots that do a few things really really well over those with wider, but less focused menus.
What are your favorites in the areas that I noted above? Are there any must-eats that we should try while in San Diego (either a place to eat, or a type of food to try that is local to San Diego)?
Thanks for your help!
