San Diego meal-- Cafe de Thai Poway

Squirrelpaws | Dec 13, 2006 02:36 AM

Mrs. Squirrelpaws, the little groundhog, & I dined at Cafe de Thai on Community Rd. & Poway Rd. a few days ago. I thought it was excellent.

My background: I like spicy "Thai hot" style Thai food; I thought Sala Thai in the SDSU area was pretty good, I thought Flavor Thai was good but not great (did have the Laotian style papaya salad), and have tried a couple of the Thai places in the strip malls on Mira Mesa Blvd but have not been dazzled. My favorite is Bangkok Cuisine in Reno, but that's a bit of a drive.

Onto the chow:
We started with the crab rolls. Crispy fried sping rolls stuffed with crab and a little bit of shrimp, served with a sweet sauce. Excellent; $6-7 got you two long ones with plenty of crab. I'm usually wary, since I think there won't be enough crab, but these were loaded.

My wife had the green chicken curry, mild. It was her first time ordering mild, and she regretted it...medium next time. Not much spice, and a noticable cumin!?! flavor dominated. Plenty of basil and a good curry, but we both thought it needed heat.

I had a Prik King, which was shrimp and chicken and green beans in a red curry paste, spicy. My daughter and I liked it; good flavor, plenty of shrimp, tasty dish overall.

For those of you concerned about atmosphere, it was a stone tile floor, white tablecloth kind of place...a little more upscale than most Thai places.

Prices were a bit high...$10 for the curry and $12 for my dish, but I won't begrudge them a couple of bucks for such good chow. Also they had a sushi bar in full operation, with some tasty-looking stuff coming out. We dropped $48 inc tax & tip for the above, inc. one large (24oz) Singha.

Bottom line: I'll definitely be back...I think we've found a new "best Thai in SD". (At least up here in North County.)
