San Diego: Best Food/Drink Items Under $3

Paul Carelli | Jun 8, 200302:15 AM

Since everything always seems to be getting more and more expensive in San Diego (especially real estate), I thought I'd start a list of great "local" eats/ drinks that can be had in the area for under $3 (I'm not including anything from a national or even a regional chain). Here's my list in no particular order, and I ask the other hounds to chime in on their favorites too.

- bag of tortilla chips right out of the fryer at La Posta #8 (Hillcrest)

- Slice of pepperoni pizza at Bronx Pizza

- hand-dipped frozen banana w/ nuts at Mr. Tastee Freeze in PB

- small stracciatella ice cream at Mootime (rich, rich, rich!!)

- refried beans at Los Quatros Milpas

- fresh-cut french fries at Phil's BBQ

- fish taco at South Beach in OB (may be more than $3 now)

- beef taco from Nico's

- carne asada taco at Tacos el Gordo in Chula Vista

- small espresso bean gelato at Gelato Vero (and the white chocolate mocha there as well)

- oatmeal stout at Karl Straus or an Arrogant Bastard Ale from Stone Brewery (at happy hour prices)

- cheeseburger at Hodad's in OB

- chicken pot pie (a la carte) at SD Chicken Pot Pie Shop

- hummus at Mama's Bakery in North Park (the shwarma would qualify too if it were less expensive)

- cup of fish chowder at the Fishery in PB
