I went to the Maddalena Restaurant at the San Antonio Winery for lunch with some co-workers, and was rather disappointed in the food and the atmosphere. When we walked in the door, there was a very, very long line (which is fine, if the food is worth the wait). Looking at their dishes, I went with spaghetti and meatballs. Their other pasta dishes didn't look too appetizing, and at over $15 for most, I thought the spaghetti would give me an idea of Maddalena's at just $12. Boy, was I wrong! The spaghetti was bland, bland, bland! No flavor.
The salad that it came with was a joke, too. It was just some greens, stale croutons, and a dressing that reminded me of how my nail polish remover smells. The only compliment I have was for their bread, which was very good. Warm, crispy crust, with a soft, chewy inside.
In addition to the blah food, the atmosphere was pretty bad, too. I have to admit that the dining room was pretty nicely decorated, but boy, were we cramped! I tried so hard to butter my bread without elbowing my co-worker. Everyone seemed so squished and uncomfortable to be sitting so close together. Not only were the chairs close together, but the tables were so close to each other, too!
Would I return? No, definitely not. For a $12 lunch, I would have expected more.
