Salumeria Rosi, for the love of pork

After searching for a restaurant in the Lincoln Center area where we could could get small plates rather than a formal meal, we decided on Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto which is just several blocks away and on a nice day, allows for a pleasant stroll.

Fortunately, yesterday was a nice day, in fact it was darn near perfect, starting with an amazing performance of War Horse (Go! It is like nothing like you have ever seen before). This was followed by a chat with one of the show's stars, then a casual dinner at "Rosi."

The restaurant's focus is salumi and small plate Italian. I love the small plate concept because you get to try many things. If something is a hit you can order more. If it's a miss, not too much out of pocket invested. With the exception of one pedestrian item, everything we had was a hit.

A lot of salumi options. We didn't want to just fill up on prosciutto, so we decided to order just a couple deli items and get some other ones to go to take home.

We started with some parmacotto, a very mild prosciutto cotto cooked ham, and porchetta toscano which had a flavorful garlicky herb taste. With the accompanying bread basket, it was a good little appetizer.

Other dishes we had were:

Minestrone Soup - The one pedestrian dish of the night. More mushy than vibrant, and bland. The only way I could add enough flavor was to ask for some grated parmagiana. It helped, but didn't completely save it.

Meatballs - Two tender meatballs on a bed of marinara and bechamel sauces.

Osso Buco D'Agnello (braised lamb shank) - Served on mashed potatoes, very comforting. The meat was fork tender.

Costina (spicy Tuscan spare rib) - The mega hit of the night for me. After our initial serving (one large rib), we ordered another. The meat was fall off the bone tender and tasted like it had been slow simmered in tomato sauce. I make an Italian style pork roast the same way, but never thought of adding some ribs into the mix. This is one dish i want to duplicate.

We skipped dessert, being full to the max.

A note about the bathroom at Rosi - It's very clean and has some interesting things on the wall. (See photo below.)

We had a good time, and the next time I see War Horse, and yes there will be a next time, I would consider another visit to Rosi.
