We went to Salsas Mexican Grill in South Boston this weekend (right were East Broadway meets West Broadway). It's owned by the "Sausage Guy," who seems to have diversified his portfolio a bit.
The service was absolutely abysmal, despite the fact that the waiter/table ratio was 1:1 while we were there. An example: our drink order arrived almost twenty minutes after being placed, which was a bit odd given that the chips and salsa were refilled a couple of times in the interim, and that our waiter didn't seem to have any more pressing affairs. The salsa, incidentally, was nice -- very finely minced with a strong but not overpowering garlic taste.
The food was a touch better than average, overall, but there was one star item that I'd return for: the soft corn taco with tinga.
I hadn't had tinga before, so I gave it a try. It turned out to be stewed pork shoulder with a slight chipotle flavor -- similar to carnitas, but more tender, less fatty, and less salty. The pico de gallo was fresh and tasty (although not outstanding). The corn tortilla tasted fresh, but was a bit flimsy. If they had doubled up the tortillas on the taco for strength (as many places do), this would have been perfect.
I'd advise folks to stay away from the "crispy" shell tacos -- these thin, perfectly shaped shells are a bit too much like the prefab storebought variety than authentic fried corn tortillas.
The menu was pretty extensive, and they had a few creative items, like the "Papa Taco" which employs a baked potato in lieu of a tortilla shell. The beans and rice were pretty much uninspired, but they weren't bad. Prices were reasonable. Entrees seemed to range from $6-10, and the tab for four adults and one child, including a few beers, was $56.
