My wife and I have been stopping at Pepe's (either eat in or take out) on our travels from PA to New England for years. We have been aware of the rivalry between Pepe's and Sally's for most of that time, but have alway's found Sally's closed when we were passing through.
Not so last night - they were open, the line at Pepe's was along the block and glacial, so we decided to try Sally's to see for ourselves.
Ushered in after a brief wait - Menus, no wine (called strike 1) - only beer. No salad (Ball 1)
Pleasant disheveled waitstaff (Ball 2) > one hour wait for pizza (swing and a miss - strike 2). Soggy, greasy pizza (no excuse for a "coal fired" pizza not to have a crisp crust) with minimal toppings (Whiffed strike 3) - $65 bill (Game over - > $5 for extra cheese - if it was extra, hate to see the standard)! One large, one small, 5 toppings total, 4 beers. We've had that at Pepe's and always felt we got our money's worth. We threw our leftovers away this morning.
I know this sounds harsh, but if this was our first New Haven pizza experience we'd never be back. Wonder if they've fallen on hard times, or have outlived their reputation.
