OK, a couple of you here have raved about Salad King, as have some people I know who aren't on this site. My girlfriend and I went there yesterday for the first time, and boy were we disappointed.

She ordered the orange beef at one chili (she usually goes for hotter but she'd been having a bit of stomach trouble) and found the beef was about the quality of a McDonald's hamburger. The flavour was OK, but not great.

I had the lime leaf chicken at fifteen chilis, and I suspect that they mean exactly that: they add fifteen chilis. Not hotter ones, just more of them. I didn't have a problem with the resulting heat -- I like it that way, at least on occasion -- but the *taste* of the chilis overpowered the rest of the dish, and the chilis were not very flavourful. It's a little sad when a *Thai* restaurant can't figure out a proper way to make food incendiary.

As for what I tasted underneath the chilis, well, it was fine, but certainly not spectacular. This place was really nothing to write home about, in my mind. Not what I had hoped for at all. I'd take the Cambodian food at Royal Angkor (Yonge N of Bloor) over what we had at Salad King any day, any time, anyhow.

Did we just order the wrong things? I've heard so many good things about the place that I'd be willing to give them a second chance. I certainly wouldn't go above ten chilis (if that) next time, but what dish should I get?
