Sakagura: the decline continues

Simon | Apr 18, 2005 01:33 PM

i went there this past weekend...over the past year, there has been a decline at Sakagura: the food quality has dipped and the prices have increased...two years ago, the service was charming and professional: mostly friendly Japanese female servers w/ great sake recommendations and prompt service...for some reason, all those waitresses have left, and been replaced by some new Japanese waitresses but also by a fairly snide crew of Japanese-American waiters/managers, who tend to explain the menu in a condescending manner and offer few helpful suggestions...

This past friday the decline was in full swing: the place was brighter than normal...the maguro sashimi was delicious, but the fluke sashimi was as tough as rubber...the seaweed salad was so overdressed and salty it was almost inedible...the miso soup was so sweet that we didn't even finish it...the cold duck w/ scallion appetizer arrived about 20 minutes after we'd eaten all our other food...the vibe was also definitely off: it felt as if it had become an unpleasant place for the staff to work, as well as for the customers to dine...i used to love this place, but unless they change things, i am not going there...

As a side note, the building (judging by the people exiting from another doorway) now also seems to contain a hidden Japanese hostess bar or brothel...
