Sahleb- Egyptian Egg Nog?

Spoony Bard | Oct 28, 2003 08:06 PM

At Cafe Dahab in Westwood last night I had a pleasant Egyptian (I'm assuming) beverage called a sahleb, which tasted like warm liquid rice pudding. Looking it up online, I've read that it's a fortifying winter concoction composed of arrowroot, milk, and nuts. I'd like to think of it as an Egyptian egg nog, minus the alcohol (though that would be a splendid addition...).

What I was served, however, lacked nuts, and I suspect much arrowroot as well, and was liberally doused with cinnamon, furthering its apparent affinity with egg nog.

Has anyone else tried this drink? Did I get the genuine article, and/or are there other places to get it?

Thanks.
