Based on a board recomendation, I stopped in at Sagres tonight. I didn't have great directions and got off the highway in a torrential rainstorm...asked a guy at a red light how to get to Columbia St..he started thinking and pointing...I mentioned we were going to Sagres. e broke into a smile like I was his long lost brother and said, "follow me." After driving blindly and taking numerous turns..following this guy..including him stopping and waiting when he made a light and we didn't, we pulled up in front..he got out and showed us a "secret" parking spot behind the restaurant..turned out he had workd there for 15 years.
Simple but nicely decorated dining room..the food was incredible..we started with a calamari, grilled and served in galic with peppers and olives..it was an entree, we share it as an app., then had a grilled pork steak and porco a alentejana..pork, clams an potatos. I've had this dish a number of times and this was far and away the best I've had..good wine list which unfortunately I didn't try...gfriend had 1 glass of wine.
The prices are unbelievable..3 entrees, 1 glass of wine amd a flan to go were $42..including a generous tip...entrees mostly $9-10. My porco would be a $25 plate at most places in Boston.
