What's next after Safeway?

Never heard of FreshCo until this past year via these news bytes. As a chain back East, is it any good? What's the closest local model here?

I'm not a Safeway shopper, never have been. My strong dislike and aversion for them may be familiar to some of you here :-) But I feel for neighbourhoods that rely on their local Safeways and whose demise now leaves many residents in those neighbourhoods with little options, especially seniors and those w/o easy transportation.

What are your thoughts on our local supermarket landscape? In my neck of the woods (Fairview, Cambie Village, Mt. Pleasant/Riley Park) there is heavy competition, but one can easily drive just a few KMs out from me and find neighbourhoods with very few shopping options, even within city limits. With our exorbitant land values, property taxes and rents, I'm speculative and ambivalent about how our food source landscape will evolve in the next 5-10 years.
