???'s about Ocean Star dim sum

fat kitty | Jan 21, 200308:51 PM

hi. i have some family coming to town soon and they are dying to go to monterey park for chinese food. based on previous posts on this board, i think that Ocean Star will be the way to go. although i've lived in l.a. for years, i have rarely gone to monterey park to enjoy the chinese dim sum places. the last time i went, several years ago, it was with some chinese business associates who treated us to lunch (and were able to do all the ordering in chinese -- it was wonderful). i have been fortunate enough to travel regularly to hong kong, so i have also had wonderful meals there, but again, i was with chinese people who could advise and order for me. it is harder for me, b/c i am "almost vegetarian" (i eat seafood, but avoid meat and poultry), so i'm a little pickier about what is in those mysterious little packages (but the rest of my family are all omnivores!).

i am a bit intimidated to go to Ocean Star without a chinese speaking chaperone. t'fore, if any of you can help me w/ the following questions, i would really appreicate it:

1. we want to go for sunday brunch. we will be a large group. reservations necessary? what is the best time to go?
2. any tips on what / how to order (aside from just pointing at the carts as they pass by, which i'm sure we will be very good at).
3. any other helpful tips to make this a fun experience? since i am one of the "locals", i wl be expected to have a clue what i am doing there, so i don't want to be caught unawares.

many thx!!
