Several weeks ago I called to make a res at MarcO, a new restaurant that was scheduled to open in the North End. My res was for last night @ 6:30p. Went there to find the doors locked and one of the guys who works at the restaurant beneath it said it has not opened at all yet. This really peeved me since I only had one night I could do RW this year and this is what I selected. I'd have been able to get a res at a number of other places since I booked early but now I was stuck. Can't beleive they didn't call me to say they couldn't honor the res!

I remembered that Mama Maria was on the list (never been there) and proceeded over. They sat us right down. The place was almost full and proceeded to be completely full as we were dining. A lovely spot. Good service. Choice of 4 apps, 4 entrees & 2 desserts.

Apps: antipasto (husband got - really good), diver scallop on risotto (I got - very good, small though), tomatoe/buff motz salad (saw others w/ & it looked like large slices of pretty colored heirloom tomatoes), I forget what the other app was. Entrees: pork (husband got - I don't eat meat so, sorry, I don't pay attention to details. He said it was pretty good, not fab). Tuna over squid ink pasta (I got - the pasta was very good, not the best piece of tuna - too much fat). Spaghetti w/ Maine shrimp was another (looked good) and again, I forget the other. Entree portions were large and they serve a bread basket w/ good bread, pesto dipping sauce & olives. Dessert was either chocolate torte (hubby liked) or blueberries w/ a sweet white sauce over (I got - can't remember what this sauce is called - it was okay). There was also a RW red & white wine special, each $28 which was good since regular wine bottle prices seemed to start at about $42. We got the red which was a Sangiovese. I've had some Sangiovese that I was not crazy about but this one was nice.

We ended up having a lovely night out even though MarcO failed us.
