An old Family Circle Cookbook lists this word for scallops wrapped in bacon. While I have seen this occasionally in Asian buffets, I've never really considered it an Asian dish. More of a 1960s-70s comfort food...very "American".
Thus was I surprised by a Bob Newhart clip, currently circulating on PBS, in which they order rumaki from a Chinese takeout!
Was this, in fact, considered a Chinese dish in its day? Was it somehow different (sauce? spices?) from the standard "bacon-wrapped scallops" one finds today (mostly at cocktail parties)? Does the name mean anything specific in Chinese?
Has anyone actually seen it on a Chinese menu? By which name?
