I went out for dinner tonight with a guest and my parents--who were paying. The place was fairly pricey. The first thing my guest was going to say after receiving the main course was that the portions were skimpy and the meal was poor value, or "not worth the money." I stopped my guest before anything was said. Afterwards, because we're quite close, I mentioned that that was not a good thing to say off the bat. The guest thinks I'm absolutely out of hand, and that given that the meal was objectively poor value there was nothing offensive/rude about it.
I think it's simply ungracious. Who's right? Am I being uptight? Or is my guest being obtuse?
