I wouldn't ordinarily start a new thread to write a bad review of a restaurant after just a single visit, but my impression of Ruby Slipper (the Canal St. location) warrants it, and enough people recommend it on this board that I wanted to share my view.
For some time, Surrey's (either location) has been my favorite breakfast spot. But Friday morning I was near Ruby Slipper and headed to the FQ Fest, so I decided to give it a try. Big mistake. It's not a good restaurant. The pancakes were ok -- certainly not any better than that, but ok nonetheless. But the migas was just a big, gloppy miss. And based on what I experienced and observed at other tables, it's hard to imagine that any of the normal excuses one sees -- an "off day," I ordered the wrong thing, etc. -- would apply. I just think it's not a good restaurant.
On the plus side, I could walk right in without a wait (so often not the case at Surrey's), and the service was very friendly and efficient.
