I just lost a post on this, so I'll try to recast.
After a few folks on this board mentioned that ruby of siam , skokie was better than the evanston branch and after the trib anointed it one of the 5 best thai in chicago (though their list is dubious) we tried it out.
As the trib mentioned there were a few thai families gathered there, and also numerous other families and folks straight from old orchard down the block. Maybe we were grouped wiuth these folks and so are cries for thai styles food was unheeded (though a few other requests were also unheeded. When ordering spring rolls, we asked for sauce on the side and were told everything is served with sauce on the side. spring rolls arrived drenched in sauce)
som tom was unsour and lacked herbs. A pork pad kra pao which i had seen on thai families table and looked good came out to our table much soupier and without any heat after I pleaded, begged, insisted, whimpered for thai heat - though i had a feeling our waitress was barely listening. Everything was oversweetened, which is my main objection at the evanston branch - I didn't really find much difference between the two.
The one dish we did like was actually the one item specifically panned by the trib - chive dumplings. These were big, full of greens, a little soft and chewy on the inside but panfried crisp and cruncy on the outside. After we finished our first plate we ordered another.
IF you are looking for Hot/Sour/Saly/Sweet here, you may be disappointed.
