Although I live v close to downtown, I had some strange mental block keeping me away from Roy's. We finally went one evening last week, and based solely on the food am I sad I waited!
I ordered the tuna tartar to start, excellent quality melt in your mouth raw dark pink tuna in a light sauce that tasted slightly of truffles and was sprinkled with black sesame seeds. Delicious!
For seconds I ate a sea bass of dense texture, crusted in a dry green curry atop coconut rice all wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed. I am not a huge person and can rarely finish American size portions. This was indeed generously sized and I CLEANED my plate....so good I have been craving it ever since.
Problems: service ranged from slightly annoyed to supercilious with little in between. We didn't mind the food coming out of the kitchen a little slowly because we were enjoying the company...but we ordered what might have been a very nice bottle of pinot noir, but it was served not *a little* under room temperature, it was served cold enough to be a white wine. It opened up a little as we sat, but truly never warmed enough for the wine to open and the flavor to come to fruition. Have you ever eaten at a relative's house and they served you red wine from the refrigerator? I do not exaggerate when I say that is the experience. I had to touch the bottle several times to reassure myself I was not being snarky just for the sake of it. Suggestion: when you go, stick to white wine or mixed drinks!
