Rox Diner (Newtonville): solid food, iffy service

Jenny Ondioline | Oct 17, 201505:54 PM     3

Allstonian and I finally got around to having dinner at Newtonville's Rox Diner tonight. We'll be wanting to return for the food: her fish and chips was really good: the panko crust is unusual, but nicely done, and the fish (haddock, I believe) was properly moist and tender. It's not a patch on the Druid, but not at all bad. My burger was entirely solid, particularly the better-than-it-had-to-be bacon, and it was a better than average example of the brioche bun, which I know is not everyone's favorite. Really good, perfectly fried and savory-sweet onion rings, but just-okay slaw. Still, a meal good enough that I want to explore the menu further.

But oy with the service. It's apparently done tag team style -- rarely a good idea -- and our first waitress took an embarrassingly long time to enter our very simple order into her phone. It took at least 90 seconds when a pad and pen would have taken 10.

Our second server dropped off our plates, brought us some ketchup and thoughtfully asked if I'd like some mustard for my burger. It must have been a purely theoretical question, because we never saw this dude again.

After the third server took our plates -- I gave up trying to flag someone for the mustard when it became clear that I would be putting mustard on a cold burger -- the first waitress brought us our check and asked how everything was, which is way too late to be adding that question. Then she disappeared for another ten minutes or so before picking up our card, while several parties were clearly waiting for a table to open up. All told, the service was, as Allstonian aptly described it, "spectacularly half-assed."
