Rox Cafe

Posenose | Aug 14, 201305:20 AM

Had a somewhat uneven dinner at Rox Cafe in Newton Highlands last night. Went early (5:30) with a friend and kids in tow. The place was mostly empty but filled up as we ate.

We started with pickled veggies. for $3 - they turned out to be sweet pickles which I wasn't expecting and don't care for.
The kids had Mac and cheese which was very good although the sauce was slightly chalky/separated as happens with cheddar sometimes. I can't remember how much it cost- apologies. We ordered a side of sautéed haricots verts which were great; crunchy, salted well and garlicky. $3
I ordered the grilled peach salad which had mixed greens, goat cheese, pancetta and spiced walnuts for $9. I expected the peaches to be hot, as they were grilled, but they were stone cold. Refrigerator cold. As was the pita that came with it. It was somewhat unpleasant- is it just me or would you expect something grilled to be hot unless it stated that it was cold on the menu? Biting into an ice cold and not ripe peach was jarring. I ended up telling the hostess on the way out and she was very receptive about the feedback.
My friend had porcini ravioli with greens and cherry tomatoes which she enjoyed - $14 ish, I think.
Bill came to $43.00 ish before tip which seemed a little expensive for what we had (no drinks). All in all fairly decent- I will go back again after they've been open longer.
