Rookie needs help with cast iron skillet!

I attempted sauteeing onions to serve with pierogies today for the first time in my new pre-seasoned Lodge Logic cast iron skillet.

They came out really bitter.

I did everything else the way I would normally - good onion, good oil, etc., but they did not taste good.

Does anyone know what I did wrong?
