Not much changes at Ronald's Donuts. And that's a good thing. The owners, Henry and Janie Kang, are charming and humble. The selection hasn't changed as far as I can see in the past ten years. Other than that some of their donuts are vegan, there's nothing different in kind from the standard donut shop.
What makes Ronald's special is the quality. I know the apple fritters are their most popular item, but I write in praise of the buttermilk bars, which are plain and stubby, and absolutely delicious. With a light layer of glaze on top providing not only sweetness but an extra boost of crunch, they are exemplars of their class.
Mr. Kang gets to the Ronald's at midnight every night, while Ms. Kang has the luxury of sleeping in until 3:00 a.m. This kind of dedication to a 7-day-a-week enterprise is inspiring and commendable. Long live Ronald's!
