Rochester Magazine (Published by the Post Bulletin) has published its annual "Best Restaurants of 2006". Although it's 80% predicable, here is my critique of the top five and worst five selections on the list.
5 Best Chinese Food: Hunan Garden - China Star did not make the sweep this year in the "Chinese" categories. I like it when other restaurants keep each other on their toes.
4 Best Bar - "Whistle Binkies" - So good they are making Whistle Binkies on the lake...Enough said.
3 Best Pizza - Mr. Pizza - Rochester has a plethora of pizza places in town. Their menu offering and various crust styles please just about everyone.
2 Best Coffee - "Dunn Bros" - If you build it they will come. Rochester finally has a good coffee shop. Among its plus points there are fresh beans roasted onsite, daily eating and drink specials for breakfast/lunch/supper, and entertainment on weekends.
1 Best Restaurant - "City Café" - Bravo, this city's foodies have hope yet!
5 Best Breakfast - "Perkins" They pack them in...but I bet most people remember their bottomless cup of coffee rather than what it was exactly that they ate.
4 Best Seafood - Red Lobster - Yet another examples that we need a real seafood place in town
3 Best Greek Food - "Zorbas Greek Restaurant" - Though Zorba's is good (and only 1 of 2 restaurants in town) they rarely, if ever go off the beaten path of making Souvlaki, mousaka, and Gyros. Being a locally owned restaurant one might expect a bit of creativeness every now and again.
2 Best Desserts: Runner up "Baker's Square" - I'm a fan of pie as much as the next guy...but seriously, are that bad off for desserts in this town?!?!
1 The One Restaurant Rochester Needs Immediately - "Chilis" - Well, we do already have an Olive Garden...
