Rocco's Meatball Sandwich

Zach Georgopoulos | Apr 14, 200212:35 AM

I've had breakfast at Rocco's (on Folsom, somewhere around 6th or 7th) a few times and have always been pleased. Today I dropped my car off at my mechanic's shop around there, and since I had eaten breakfast at home and it was already late afternoon, I decided to look at what else they might have on the menu. Always a fan of meatball sandwiches, I ordered Rocco's. My standard for this sort of thing (Italian style meatball sandwiches -- not to be compared to Vietnamese), is the OLD U.S. Restaurant's sandwich (as I've posted before, I don't think the current U.S. incarnation cranks out as good a meatball or sauce). On my Old-U.S.-Meatball-o-meter (the old U.S. sandwich being a "10"), I would give Rocco's sandwich an "8". Given that I only give the current U.S. sandwich a "7", this may make Rocco's the best meatball sandwich currently known to me in S.F. (there was this little deli in the industrial part of South San Francisco I used to frequent 12 or so years ago, see, but I don't know if it's there any more and I can't remember the name...). Anyhow, the meatballs were well seasonced and nice and mushy and smothered in sauce and melted cheese, served squished to the point of overflowing in a toasted french roll. Overflowing enough so that sauce, meatball, and cheese spill over on the fries while you're eating, leaving wonderfully smothered fries. The fries themselves are crispy and decently seasoned (I think I could taste olive oil in the cooking medium). Sandwich, fries and a Coke was just under $10. I ate at 3:30, and it is now 9:30 and I'm still not hungry -- plenty o' sandwich. I noticed a sign as I was leaving informing the patrons that Rocco's will be closed briefly for a "facelift" starting April 15th (I think it said two weeks), so you may have to wait awhile for your meatball sandwich. I just hope "facelift" isn't code for "change of ownership," as that never bodes well...
