What Roberta Had for Dinner

Following an enthusiastic recommendation from my friend Sayuri (who told me, "this man really knows how to cut fish") I visited Sushi on Oracle this evening. Trying to stick to low carbs was not a problem for me. I ordered a custom "roll" made of creamcheese and avocado "wrapped" in cucumber. Gorgeous! Then I ordered a large sashimi platter and I have to say it was probably enough for two and, although I shared it with my two friends, I had to finish every morsel of some of the freshest and tastiest fish I've ever had. It came beautifully presented and consisted of slices of salmon, tuna, snapper, and tako. What a treat. And, this chef, whose name I must get next time, takes the time to add the little touches that will distinguish this restaurant from all the others here (to my knowledge). For example, the wasabi is formed into a leaf shaped portion, scored to represent the veins. The ginger is NOT colored red but is presented in its natural shade and is the tangiest and most refreshing I've had. My friends ordered a seaweed salad which I sampled and found delightfully seasoned and wonderfully textured. One friend, not familiar with Japanese food, ordered a combo plate of teriyaki salmon and california roll. It was priced at $8.50 and she received a HUGE portion of lovely moist salmon, a large salad, and about 6 pieces of California roll. She took about half of her meal home. My other friend ordered my favorite, unagi don. Oh, brother!!! I haven't seen quality like that in a long time. Lovely smelt-like pieces of fresh water eel on rice with a tangy sweet coating. Yumm. I had no dessert but my friends reported the green tea ice cream was good. Japanese restaurants generally do not feature desserts I think.
The service was also wonderful. Our waitress, a young Japanese woman, took great care of us, was knowledgable about the food and was so accomodating and welcoming.
What can I say? Thank goodness we have a new and great! Sushi restauarant in Tucson. How lucky can we be???
