Roast Chicken in the Crock Pot

I do it this way sometimes for convenience sake but miss the yummy crispy skin you get from oven roasting (miss the pan drippings too). Do you think I could blast it first in the oven at a high temp to brown it and then cook it all day in the slow cooker? And would 500 be too high?
