All of the discussions concerning Roanoke are years old and most mention Roanoke as having 'good eats' without being specific. We were there 3 years ago and had a disappointing meal at Wildflour. We find ourselves back again this month and would like to eat well this time.

Our preference is to find an artisan: one who cooks out of passion and not purely for fame or money. The place we are looking for is usually not cutesy branded, themed, or interior decorated up the wazoo. There is never or seldom a Sysco truck seen outside. The proprietor cooks where she or he is and does not try to recreate NOLA or Key West in Virginia. That said, it matters little to us whether the chef has been trained by the grandma, or in Mexican, French, Chinese, Thai, Cordon Bleu, CIA, or Meilleur Ouvrier traditions, or whether dinner for two is $21 or $210, as long as it is worth the time and money. It is a plus if the chef is not a one-trick pony with expertise only in grill, or bbq, or fish, but also not trying to offer a 50 item menu and falling flat on his or her face. We have found good food in gastropubs but almost never in bars. We do not expect to find decent sushi in roanoke and so any restaurant that offers' (fill in the blank) And Sushi' is an automatic disqualification, as is any restaurant with the word 'fusion' near the name. Sound snobbish? You bet. Serious? You bet. It is our time, our lives, our stomachs and our money. We call the shots. You can help us, if you please. In return we could weigh in on several dozen other cities for like-minded travelers.
