Ristorante San Marco - Ambler (long)

JanR | Jan 4, 2005 08:13 PM

We had what was probably our worst restaurant experience at the San Marco restaurant tonight. We had been there once before and thought it was just okay, if a bit pretentious. The only reason we returned was a gift certificate (which I ended up forgetting at home anyway). That certificate will end up in the trash, as neither of us wish to return. While we waited to be seated, two men very rudely insisted to the hostess that they be seated immediately. Apparently, she had wanted them to wait for a third party who was to join them (who I later noted, never did--maybe they just wanted a four-top). I understand their wish to be seated, but they were very rude to this sweet young woman. The worst part of the evening, though, was the two men seated next to us. They appeared to be regulars, as the maitre'd was fawning all over them and one of them noted that he'd ordered his "usual", after telling him he'd waited so long he could hardly remember what he'd ordered. He then took a phone call which lasted about 15 minutes, during which he loudly berrated someone who worked for him. I am not exaggerating. He spoke for that long and was practically screaming. I expected someone from the restaurant to say something to him but, no, the maitre'd came back and fawned over his companion while he continued to scream into the phone. BTW, his companion had his own phone conversation for a while. They ruined our dinner, as we were seated quite close to them. As I said, we will never return. The restaurant's handling (or non-handling) of this obnoxious behavior was unforgiveable.
