Hi-Rise Bakery, Cambridge

Went to the Hi Rise on Concord for brunch a few days ago.

Good spicy chorizo -- not just a kick, but also good flavor. Came in a sandwich with folds of fried egg. Very satisfying.

The oatmeal was excellent -- moist but not wet, a deep taste of the golden fields in the grain. Subtle sweeteness and even subtler tartness from dried cherries were a good counterpoint to the oatmeal. Also loved the contrast of hard crunches of pecans against the soft moist oatmeal, along a very pleasant textural dimension.

The basket of toast was huge - 7 slices of bread iirc. I regret getting toast, the dark heat conceals the natural textures of the bread, and even thought I felt a range of textures from feathery wisp to moderate sponge to dense soft cushion, there was always a charred crackle to contend with. The stars were definitely the spreads with the bread -- a cloudy maple butter/syrup that was glorious in mouth, sweet and aromatic; bright apricot preserves, a summery throwback and a dark huckleberry preserve, full of the berry flavor and with just the right amount of spritely acid. Preserves are lovely with dabs of plugra butter (one gets a good sized triangle). Plenty to wrap one's tongue around.
