Rick's Rather Rich Ice Cream and Water Ices

Melanie Wong | Nov 30, 200306:50 PM

It's taken me more than a year, but I finally had a chance to take Eurie's advice and try Rick's in Palo Alto. Disappointing to find out that pumpkin flavor was sold out, but the other seasonal flavors more than made up for it. Loved the cranberry walnut - zingy tart berry pink ice cream with toasty/crunchy walnut bits and also the eggnog - very rich and eggy with a good dose of rum flavor and spiced. I had a sample of toasted almond which had intense almost marzipan-like richness of flavor, but the nuts were not crisp. Likewise the kulfi was not the freshest with terrific flavor in the ice cream, but the pistachios were a little water-logged. I'd like to try both of these from newer batches some time. The two ices were similarly spectacular - the mango is concentrated and has a pulpy texture from mango puree and the orange is very intense too with good acid balance.

Definitely worth checking out when you're in Silicon Valley.
