Richmond – Sooooooul Truck – Mama Son Soul Food

On Saturdays, there’s a new Soul Food truck on 23rd and Brooks. It is at the point on 23rd where the street splits and becomes one way. So if you are on 23rd going to Berkeley it is necessary to go around the block.

There’s a little smoker on the sidewalk for the ribs ($10) and a few plastic chairs and card table if you want to eat in the parking lot.

Jambalaya is $5. Sides are $2 (yams, potato salad, green beans, black eyed peas, red beans & rice). Peach cobbler and banana pudding costs $3.50. Today’s specials were smothered turkey wings, neck bones and fried chicken wings.

I got the neck bones mainly because it came with black eyed peas. Lao Thai Kitchen has me interested in black-eyed peas. Unfortunately, instead of the black eyed peas, I got red beans and rice. The food was satisfying but nothing really amazing. There was a dense corn bread muffin that was average. Not the best or worst of its kind.

I don’t know the standards for neck bones, and may have never had them before. There were three hunks of bones with some meat attached and a layer of meat that fell off the bone. It was very tender but not very seasoned.

The red beans and rice were fine with a little mild spice. The very canned green beans were seasoned with bacon fat. I’d skip these next time though because of the canned flavor. Actually I should not be talking about this food in the past tense as it will be dinner tonight. However, I wanted to try a bit while it was hot off the truck.

While the food wasn’t the best soul food I’ve had, it was decent and I’ll probably check out the jambalaya, yams, black eyed peas and desserts next time I’m in the area on a Saturday.

Asked if this was the truck that’s been reported being sighted in Oakland. Ron said no, but he heard of a guy that was down that way and doing something similar to his truck.

The truck will be in that location Saturdays.
