Rice and peas in rice cooker: help troubleshooting please

Olivia | May 24, 201608:06 AM     7

Last night I made rice and peas in my rice cooker and it was disaster. Hoping someone can tell me where I went wrong...
-I used 5 scoops jasmine rice (rinsed and drained) and put it in the pot, then a mixture of water and coconut milk (about 2/3 water and 1/3 coconut milk) to the white rice "5" line, along with a big pinch of salt.
-about half-way through I added the drained contents of a tin of red kidney beans and gently stirred.
-when the "keep warm" light came on I tried some of the rice and it was crunchy. I added a bit more water, and pressed the "white rice" cook button again. This happened another time, so I added more water. By the time the rice registered as cooked it was soggy mush. D'oh!

Questions:
1) Should I have used a different setting than "white rice?"
2) I'd never made the maximum quantity of rice in this cooker before (it's a Panasonic SRDF101 https://www.amazon.ca/Panasonic-SR-DF...). Are better results yielded with smaller quantities?

NB: I know I could do it on the stovetop, but when entertaining if I can do it in the rice cooker it's much more convenient.

Any thoughts you have are welcome; thanks in advance!
