Planned to meet my daughter around 8:15 last night for a last minute dinner at Barcelona in Brookline. I arrived before my daughter, the restaurant was packed, there was a short wait for a table and I found the restaurant to be extremely loud for my taste. When my daughter arrived, she suggested that we try Ribelle as neither us had ever been so we walked across the street to find Ribelle only about half full. What a great decision. The food was outstanding. I have seen a lot of criticism for the size of their portions and prices but frankly I am more interested in flavor combinations, creativity and a menu that pushes the boundaries. The pleasant waitress said that typically 2 people would order 4-6 plates and share. We are not big eaters so we ordered 4 plates, 2 glasses of wine and we still had leftovers. Two of the items were miniscule in size but huge on flavor, King oyster mushrooms with shaved egg yolk, and these crunchy, sweet rye toast balls about the size of a caper and Agnolotti with sweet potato, sunflower and gochugaru, whatever that is. Both were delicious. We had started our meal with Sicilian semolina toasted bread served with a caponata which was excellent and enough to feed 3-4 people. We finished with house made pappardelle noodles the size of lasagna noodles which was served with a bolognese, grilled kale and pork rinds. The pappardelle was also a fairly large portion, delicious and we did not finish this dish. All told our meal with tip and tax came to $110 which I thought was very reasonable given the very high quality. Also of note, the 3 for $30 before 6:30 is now 3 for $35 which still looks like a great deal. They do not give you a choice of the entire menu but with the 8 choices (2 of which were desserts), the 3 choices I would have taken would be $71 on the regular menu and that’s still a GREAT deal!! I will definitely be back and for those who complain about the portion size and prices, please stay away so that there will be plenty of table space for me.
