Rex Cafe

I just had to give a shout out for this place. It is a nice neighborhood place at Polk and Green.

I used to go in there often for dinner or brunch. I'd often go in on a weekday after coming home from work at 9:30 or 10:00 and have a beer and a meal at the bar.

It has a nice interior and the staff is efficient and friendly. They do have a couple of TVs, but the sound is off and music playing. I always let the bf face the TV.

It is a more refined atmosphere for brunch than Polkers [and I do also like Polkers]. And they have outdoor tables, to which a server will bring out a bowl of water for your dog.

It is not cutting edge food, but I've always been happy with my meals there.

I've only eaten there once this year, but ever since I started going, one of the owners always remembers me and we always say hi when I pass by the restaurant or see him on the street.

So today I was trying to use the ATM next to Rex, and once again [3 out of the last 4 days] it was closed. He saw me turn around and grimace. He said what is wrong? I said the dang ATM is closed again.

He said what do you need? Oh, no, it's fine, I'll use my credit card. He insisted on loaning me a $20.

We chatted for a while; he's 100% North Beach Sicilian [the chef is French]. As he went into the restaurant to go to work, he said come in sometime and I'll buy you dinner.

I'm not related. He is a mensch and it is nice to live in a neighborhood where you are recognized as a regular by restaurants and store clerks.
