REVIEW w/ pics: Lunch at Fiesta Sa Barrio

The last time I went to Fiesta Sa Barrio was in the tiny restaurant that they had at a small strip mall, but that was several years ago. At the time, I was only with two other people so we weren’t able to try many dishes. Now, they had a newish and bigger location. So when I went there for lunch, I went with a larger group of friends which meant we were able to order more dishes. After Fiesta Sa Barrio, we also stopped by Caramia Gelato in Eagle Rock Plaza for a dessert after dessert and that’s the 12th item mentioned below.

1. Lumpiang Shanghai
2. Chicken Chicharron (Fried Chicken Skin)
3. Laing Sa Gata (Taro Leaves in Coconut Milk)
4. Crispy Pata (Deep Fried Pork Shank)
5. Miki Bihon (Rice Noodles and Egg Noodles with Vegetables)
6. Pork Sisig
7. Bicol Express (Seafood in Spicy Coconut Milk)
8. Kare Kare (Oxtail and Tripe Peanut Butter Stew)
9. Paksiw Na Lechon (Pork in Liver Sauce)
10. Inihaw Na Bangus (Broiled Milkfish Stuffed with Tomatoes and Onions)
11. Halo Halo (Shaved Ice with sweet beans, jellies, leche plan, ube halaya and ube ice cream)
12. Buco (Young Coconut) Sorbetto and Corn Ice Cream) from Caramia

Overall, I thought the food was fairly solid. The meal only had 3 misses. First, the chicken chicharron was too thick and clumpy to enjoy eating. Second, the Taro Leaves in the Coconut Milk didn’t seem like it was blended enough and not as thick as I’ve had in the past. Last, the Pork Sisig seemed watered down, when I should have been tasting the soy sauce and chili peppers that make up this dish.

Along with the 3 misses, there were 3 highlights. First, there was the Bicol Express. While it wasn’t spicy, which it is known for, there was a good amount of seafood. That with the veggies and the shrimp paste gave the coconut milk broth a nice hit of pungency.

Second, I loved the broiled milkfish. This fish was really more like a Rellenong Bangus (Stuffed Bangus). Basically, the fish meat was removed, mixed with tomatoes, onions and other seasonings and cooked, stuffed back into the fish and then grilled. Eaten with the anchovy sauce, this was a delicious entree.

Finally, with the heat, Halo Halo was the perfect ending to the meal. Halo Halo, by the way, is shaved ice with sweet beans, jellies, leche plan, ube halaya and ube ice cream.

One thing about the meal did frustrate me a bit. It took a long time for the garlic rice to arrive. In fact, the rice didn’t get to us until the majority of other dishes had already been sitting on our table for awhile, so I definitely wasn’t happy with that.

One last thing to note, Fiesta Sa Barrio is Cash Only, so put that credit card away. As for Caramia Gelato, I sampled some of their gelatos and found most of them to be oversweet. The Buco Sorbetto and Corn Ice Cream were the flavors that weren’t as high on the sweet meter, but even then, I don’t think I’ll be visiting Caramia anytime soon.
