Review - Nook (9th Ave @ 50th st)
We had dinner here the other night. The place is, as advertised, a tiny nook and maneauvering around in here to get to your table/seat is tricky. The restroom is in the back of the kitchen, so to use it, you have to walk through their tiny, working kitchen, I suggest you visit the facilities prior to eating here.
That being said, the service is competent and good hearted, and the food is high quality, interesting, and great value.
I started with a country salad ($7) which was mixed greens, goat cheese, roast pears, and candied walnuts. It's a classic combination and works well here.
After that I went with the Thai marinated lamb chops ($18) which taste like the thin cut pork chops you sometimes see at Vietnamese places. Very well flavored, with great charring. These are served over chived mashed potatoes and braised red cabbage. I liked the whole combo. Along with these we got a few sides of rosemary french fries ($4) which were superb. Dark and crispy with an excellent rosemary flavor to them.
My SO had the beef cube goulash over noodles ($12) which was a touch on the spicy side but quite tasty. It was a good call for a cold winter evening.
After that we had a number of desserts -- apple crumb cake ($6) , chocolate cake ($6) and an ice cream sundae ($6) which were all pretty solid, although I didn't really tuck into them that much. I was stuffed at this point.
The place is BYO and doesn't charge corkage fees, so its a great place to take a special bottle or two. However its so small that a group bigger than four is going to feel awkward, so save this for small groups or couples. I thought to myself that this would be a good place for a girl to treat a date for a night out, if it was early in the courtship ritual. It's romantic and inexpensive, and would pleasantly surprise most men.
The whole area around 9th ave has just blossomed in the last few years with inexpensive, interesting places to eat, that are much better than the tourist traps of the theater district.
