My husband and I went to Cafe Juanita last night for our first anniversary (having originally planned to go to Chicago for the weekend, our plans were thwarted by the flu that's going around at the moment and we had to opt for somewhere a little closer to home). I almost felt lucky I'd caught the flu! This was our first visit, and what a find - thanks to all the Chowhounds who've previously posted about this place, as otherwise I would have had no idea it existed.
I can't comment on the wine list, as I'm pregnant and abstaining, but my husband seemed to enjoy his selections from their "by the glass" list!
The food was incredible - I started with the baby beet salad, topped with a ball of light bread filled with gorgonzola and baked until crispy - delicious. My husband had the goat cheese gnocchi with lamb ragu, and couldn't stop talking about it. Tiny, pillow light gnocchi in a perfectly balanced sauce... divine. I then had the duck breast, served with farro - a large grain I'd never tried before but found interesting and a good match for the duck. The skin of the duck breast was PERFECT; salty, crispy and with just the right amount of juicy fat still attached. Without doubt one of the best duck meals I've ever had. Our other entree choice was the rabbit raviollini - again, a wonderful dish. We finished the meal with their Meyer lemon tart, which was as delicious as we'd come to expect from Cafe Juanita!
Our server was attentive and knowledgable, and wished us happy anniversary as he brought out the lemon tart with a candle sparkling on top.
All in all, a wonderful evening, and we'll definitely be returning (hopefully soon!).
