Review: Bodrum, new UWS Mediterranean

Whippet | Jul 25, 200709:43 PM     2

About a week ago, the parents and I tried Bodrum, the new pan-Mediterranean place on the WS. The bread was an really tasty sort of focaccia/lavash-ish thing, offered with olives and olive oil (both good). The apps were okay -- a good but unmemorable and uncreative shepherd's salad, a decent (reportedly) baked shrimp/cheese/veg thing and some slightly-too-chewy but fresh calamari. Service was pleasant enough but disorganized (well, they *are* new), and the open side of the restaurant was constantly bombarded with extremely loud Amsterdam traffic, sirens, etc. My mother and I both ordered pizzas (sausage and artichoke respectively), which were a pleasant surprise, out of the brick oven, though she commented on the small quantity of sausage on hers. They were very good, and the consensus was that Celeste does better, the difference wasn't enormous. The unqualified disaster was my father's fish (something white, though I can't remember what -- bass, maybe?), which was overcooked and ended up overly fishy and unpleasant in texture. To their credit, when my father mentioned this to the server at the end of the meal (he had remained silent, for whatever reasons of his own, at the early check-in), the owner or manager came of to apologize (not terribly graciously, but by no means rude, either), and we were offered a free dessert, which my parents enjoyed, though I thought the accompanying vanilla ice cream was not very good, and possibly freezer-burned.
My sense is that there's definite potential here, revealed in those pizzas, but if they don't step it up before a real reviewer hits them, they won't last.
