My husband and I took an out-of-town friend to Allen's for dinner last Friday night. We'd dined at Allen's one other time and had really enjoyed it, but had waited for a somewhat "special" occasion as the price point is a little high for us to make regular trips there. On this visit, we had one bottle of wine, each had an appetizer and entree, then split two desserts. The total tab for three people came to $315--which seemed a little steep. However, everything was outstanding which is why we'll keep going back for special occasions.
I started with a tempura-battered softshell crab served with a delicious papaya relish. Husband had a woodland mushroom ragout (to die for!) and friend enjoyed a haricot verts salad with goat cheese, smoked salmon and basalmic vineagrette. For an entree, I got the elk tenderloin with the afore-mentioned mushroom ragout and a red wine reduction. It was fabulous--game is their specialty for a reason. Friend had a fish dish which was good but clearly not a standout as I cannot remember what specific type or the accompaniments. Husband had the seared sea scallops which were very good. For dessert, we split the house-made sorbets and a chocolate mousse item which were both great.
The service was excellent--not overly pushy, but always there when you needed it. The wine list is a bit pricey. We had a hard time finding a decent bottle of red under $65. Overall though, I would highly recommend Allen's. The space is warm and inviting, the food is excellent, and the service is great.
