Return of the wayword hound as well...
Wedding plans have kept me pretty busy. I have been wanting to my duties as a chowhound. Although the big day is over a month out I have found myself with some time tonight.
Yesterday Tanya and I returned to the Napa farmers market following it's 7 month absense. In the 36 hours we have been away we managed to consume most of out booty. The apricots were awesome, the cherries a delight and the strawberries, pure ambrosia. We all love those spring and summer fruits. But the versions found at most corperate mega markets leave me cold. Varieties of fruit selected for their ability to survive the display. Picked way to soon. Insipid tasting, but hell, they look nice!
Not so at the farmers market. Many of the same familiar faces are back. The fellow we call "Peaches, peaches, peaches" for his carnival barker approach to reeling in the buyers Always a knife in hand offering sample of glorius fruits. The chinese mushroom lady was present to sell us our portobella and argarcus fungi. We spent too little on a huge bunch of sweet williams for our vases. I sometimes forget how completely satisfied I feel after a morning there. Fueled with coffee and delightful baked goods. Our bags stuffed with local organic bounty. What a pleasure.
