Why Do Restaurants Seat Like This?

Axalady | Feb 5, 200906:24 AM

Last night my DH and I went out to dinner. It was about 6P and the restaurant was empty, only five tables seated. They sat us between two tables that already had diners seated at them. About 5 minutes later they sat a single diner right next to us. About 1/2 hour into our meal they sat a table of 8 right next to us. The rest of the dining room remained empty.

This isn't the first time I've noticed this type of seating at high-end restaurants this year. Perhaps I'm noticing it because there are more empty tables with business down. But it seems odd to me to have everyone seated in one corner and the rest of the dining room empty.

I don't have an issue with being seated like this, and I know I always have the option to ask for another table, so please don't go there. I'm just interested in knowing why these restaurants choose to "clump" us all together like this when the dining room is empty, and I know my fellow Chow's hold the answer....
