This venue just off an exit of Hwy 101 and next to Denny's has been one Mexican restaurant or another for many years. The current iteration, Restaurante El Michoacano, opened last fall.
Recently I tried it for a solo lunch. Since it specializes in mariscos, I tried to order the rellena mariscos but was told it's not available currently. Nor the molcajete de mariscos either. Hmm, time to try for something more pedestrian. I ordered the enchiladas de camarones, $13, and an agua fresca de piña.
Complimentary warm and fresh chips and smoky tomato salsa were fine. Good thing as my dish took a while to come out and I ate quite a bit of the chips. The open kitchen only had one cook on duty and he was in the weeds.
The plate had two enchiladas made with tender corn tortillas wrapped around chopped pieces of seared shrimp and caramelized onions. The thick tomato sauce was more like a thick marinara than something made from chiles. That's not a complaint as the enchiladas were quite delicious with just the right amount of melted cheese to enhance but not overwhelm. The Mexican rice tasted good but was far too soft and clumped together. Lovely job on the beans with some whole beans in the mix and smoky, porky flavor accents. Some salad greens, a squiggle of crema and a pickled chile garnished the plate.
Most other tables had ordered seafood cocteles or various taco combination plates as far as I could tell. The food's good enough to return, but I'm not in a rush.
