after ten years living in new york, i finally got my act together and got reservations this week for restaurant week. first night, bread bar at tabla. i do not like indian food, but my bf loves it, and we watched this great program (on fashion tv, of all places) about tabla, so we go.

reservs at 9:00, seated at 9:15. perfect time for a drink, i had martini, partner had pomegranate gimlet, which was very good. very efficient waiter.

we both ordered the 30.12 special, which comes with one small plate, one large plate, two sides and desert. (fyi, the place is like a tapas bar, small sharable portions) we also order the two flights of wine, which were 15.12 per. what we ended up with was

salmon ceviche--amazing, complex texture and flavors
pork kebab w/mango(?)--interesting, not unusually so
skate--very good, perfectly prepared, but not noteworthy
stewed veal--this was probably the most 'indian' imo, but my indian experience in limited to haveli. bf loved it
two sides of naan--very good, but i've never met a naan i didn't love.
tomato kalonji chutney, which was very good.
tamarind chutney, which tasted almost sweet/sour to me. very very good.

all the above was the included in the price fix, but in addition we ordered a boondi raita (cuke/yogurt, typical, but a fave of mine) and some more garlic naan.

for desert, bf got donut holes with custard dipping sauce and cookie assortment, both of which incl in the pf, and i got a rubarb apple tart extra, because i love rhubarb, and altho i don't eat sweets, this tart was unbelievable.

two espressos and a sambuca and the bill came to $150. very much worth it. artisinal tonite!
