Restaurant report from recent weekend in Edinburgh

It's been ages since I was in Edinburgh and the restaurant scene seems to be booming. We had one standout meal and two other very good meals during our weekend in Edinburgh.

If you're going, do not miss new entrant to the Edinburgh new town scene Le Roi Fou (the Crazy King). It is a stylish, bijoux restaurant on a neighbourhood street. They are serving simple yet elegant and delicious food made from fresh local ingredients. Amongst our party, to start, we had the delicious hand dived scallops, a memorable steak tartar, tender galcian octopus and to die for, smooth and mellow foi gras. We also sampled the cod in saffron sauce which was incredible. The sauce was intense but not overpowering, with a wonderful flavour that I hope to taste again soon! For mains across our group we had quail in Burningham sauce with corn, which was tender and creamy, as well as the fillet steak which was very tasty. For dessert, do not miss the pannacotta, chocolate marquis and the simple but ingenious gin with lemon sorbet. The wine list was also excellent and very reasonably priced.

We also ate at The Dogs, a homey, quirky restaurant, which provided the perfect casual meal. Scallops again were tasty (when in Scotland...) and the rabbit terrine was good, there was also a lovely salad of goats cheese, poached pear and walnut. The market fish was well prepared and the brave in our group raved about the pigs ear.

We had lunch at the Ship on the Shore where we feasted on a classic seafood 'Royale' platter that had incredibly fresh crab, lobster, prawns, oysters, and more, along with several varieties of smoked fish. We also ordered the langoustines, which were succulent and delicious. The restaurant itself has a wood panelled ship-type feel and the seafood was top quality. We had a lovely bottle of wine too.

I hope you enjoy these places as much as we did.
